Dynamic Atlas

Dynamic Atlas (DA) is a suite of information publishing and access tools developed by FAO Environment, Climate Change and Bioenergy Division (NRC) and SKE Inc., Canada.
Dynamic Atlas allows the publishing of maps, databases, and documents from global to local scale by using technologies easy to implement and use.

Dynamic Maps: is the GIS viewer of atlases.

Dynamic Knowledgebase: provides the ability to quickly and easily set up and manage atlases.

Dynamic Publisher: enables atlases and Dynamic Maps to be packaged for broad dissemination on CD/DVD.

Dynamic Web Maps Server: enables publishing of atlases over the Internet.

Overview and Download
The Angola Municipalities Atlas is a digital database of indicators related to the Angolan rural sector. The atlas can be browsed on your desktop using Dynamic Maps, the GIS viewer of Dynamic Atlas, or through the Web using the on-line mapping system.

The main topics addressed in the atlas are:
1. Geographic context
2. Crops and crop calendars
3. Animals
4. Food security
5. Rural economy

For a quick overview of the content, you may use the web mapper, which allows you to retrieve almost any information contained in the atlas. Note that a web mapping system requires fast Internet connections to support the amount of data that is frequently exchanged between browser and server. Use the light version of the web mapper if the full version is too slow (see comparison table below).

Note: The project has produced geo-referenced images of topographic maps at 1:100 000 scale for the entire Country. The atlas containes only one image covering Luanda. If you wish to get the full set of images, please contact the project focal point.

1. After the download is complete, unzip the file to your hard drive and extract its content (double-click on Angola July 2006.exe). Make sure you keep all the pathnames intact. It is advisable to keep the atlas close to the root drive (i.e. c:/atlases/) so that file pathnames do not become too long.

2. If have not installed the Dynamic Maps, download the software and service pack. Then, run the setup file and follow the prompts during the installation.

3. After re-booting the computer, run the Dynamic Maps 3.1 Service Pack 6.exe. This will apply any updates to the software. If you have installed any other Dynamic Atlas software, such as Dynamic Knowledgebase, then make sure you download and apply the service packs for those products as well.

4. Start Dynamic Maps. You now can import the atlas that you copied in step 1. Click on Import, which will bring up a Browse for Folder form. Navigate to the atlas and pick the root folder.

5. Once the atlas has been imported, select and open it.
