Typhoon Ketsana: Data and Information

Typhoon Ketsana formed early on September 23 2009, about 860 km (535 mi) to the northwest of Palau (see storm path on the right). After September 25, it was upgraded to a Tropical Storm and then to Severe Tropical Storm and was named as Ketsana. By September 28 2009 typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines and South Laos. FAO disaster support in Lao People's Democratic Republic FAO has taken the lead in the Lao PDR to support the collection of basic geo-spatial data, in particular satellite imagery, and conduct analysis for validating and assessing flood impact on population, natural resources and agriculture. FAO has requested the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) to trigger the activation of the International Charter Space and Major Disasters to support the damage assessment and response efforts related to Typhoon Ketsana in Lao PDR.
