Kharif Crop Masks: methodology

This project has developed crop masks for Rice, Cotton and Sugarcane (Punjab and Sindh) for the year 2014-15. The work has been documented through a comprehensive report compiled by SUPARCO.

  1. Acquisition of satellite data (1st), specifically SPOT (2.5, 5 & 10 m) data
  2. Training samples collection based on randomly selected segments
  3. Digitization of segments

  4. Classification of satellite images to extract sugarcane area
  5. Acquisition of satellite data (2nd) and masking "off" of sugarcane to ensure minimal inter-crop anomalies

  6. Supervised classification of multi-date data based on training area collected during field survey. Rice and cotton are identified in addition to the sugarcane previously mapped.

  7. Ground validation surveys. District wise ground truth points were collected for whole of the study area in Punjab and Sindh.

  8. Post-classification accuracy assessment. The Error or Confusion Matrix was prepared to compare classification results with ground truth information collected through sampling.

  9. Vectorization of cotton, rice and sugarcane classes and development of final dataset for each crop.
