8th targeted training course on Agriculture Information System

10-16 June, 2013. Islamabad at SUPARCO

This training course aims to build provincial capacity for crops forecasting and estimation. This training was organized to develop local technical and methodological expertise to get timely, reliable crop statistics on acreage and yield based on satellite imagery and use of GIS.

Remote sensing and GIS is fast track, efficient method to estimate crop area, production and yield. Participants from Punjab Crop Reporting Services, Sindh Crops Reporting Services, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Crops Reporting Services, University of Agriculture Faisalabad and Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam attended the course.

  • Introduction to Remote Sensing in Agriculture
    This has covered major role of remote sensing and GIS technologies for the benefit of policy & decision makers, agri-business community, farmers associations and farming communities.
  • Satellite data processing for Crops area estimation
    Image processing technique with reference to crops classification system for satellite data were explained along with hands on training.
  • Agricultural Land Use Mapping
    Land use / land cover in Pakistan was previously missing geospatial data which is of prime importance for many fields of science like flood modeling, agricultural trend analysis, image processing improvements etc.
  • Crop Modeling Concepts and Models
    Mainly multiple regression models were exercised by the trainees to be well equipped with the process of satellite and other allied data handling like processing of satellite vegetation images, NDVI profiling, model calibration and model development and inter comparison.
  • Satellite based Vegetation Analysis
    Change detection techniques as well as comparison to previous cropping season helps to reveal the progress of current season. This make up the major component of crop monitoring during crop season and its early warning system.
  • Geospatial Agro-meteorology
    In Pakistan, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) record meteorological data as point data (met station). This is not directly useful for crop monitoring and assessments. This data is further processed in Geospatial domain to produce data and fill the gaps to provide information on district levels.
  • Crop Yield Modeling for Forecasting /Estimation
    All data produced during yield modeling exercise were arranged into model calibration matrices. These matrices were statistically analyzed to develop most appropriate model for early forecasting during crop season and estimation model for estimate at harvest.
  • IT role in crops monitoring system
    IT plays very important role in agriculture information system management which also became the integral part of the training. Android based Area frame system was practically demonstrated to the trainees.
