Workshop: "Crop Information Portal and GeoNetwork software"

January 20th-31st, 2014, at SUPARCO, Islamabad, Pakistan

crop portal GUI There is a strong need to share information efficiently and consistently among stakeholders for its effective information utilization. Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) made an effort to develop the Crop Information Portal, which serves the purpose to support local/national crop reporting services in data and information dissemination on major crops and agro-meteorological conditions affecting crop growth.

training class To give an overview of the Crop Information Portal, its graphical interface with hands on practice on data extraction, charting and mapping, a training course was arranged from 20-31 January at SUPARCO Islamabad, Pakistan. It included training on extracting data, generating maps about major crops and agro-meteorological variables archived in the Portal. During the training, a thorough understanding was developed about the web interface, tools and functionalities to filter the database and extract raw data for further analysis, generate charts and maps on the fly, analyze the retrieved information and compile outputs to improve research documents, reports, bulletins or presentations for their own activities. User guides and practical exercises were arranged to support the practical sessions during the training.

SUPARCO has facilitated the event by providing training room and equipment, as well as any other required support. The workshop has been organized in three following dedicated trainings:

Trainers were: (1) Emanuele Tajariol (Geosolutions Inc), (2) Antonio Martucci (FAO) and (3) Patrizia Monteduro (FAO)

Provide experts from SUPARCO, Provincial Crop Reporting Services (CRS) and Universities of technical insights on the administration and use of the Crop Information Portal, and an overview of the state-of-art standards and tools for managing geo-spatial data by using GeoNetwork opensource software.

Through this training, participants have familiarized with the WEB interface, tools and functionalities of the Crop Information Portal, and have had details on back-end components and technologies adopted to build the application. Through practicing GeoNetwork, participants have become aware of methodologies and tools for documenting and publishing geospatial data by adopting international standards and widely adopted protocols.

Main objectives:

  • Promote and increase awareness of the Portal among Government organizations, statistics agencies, universities etc..
  • Build capacity of extracting data and information on Pakistan's crops and agromet variables archived in the Portal.
  • Provide and overview of the technologies on which the various components of the Crop Portal infrastructure have been built.
  • Provide technical details on tools and procedures for data upload and management which have been developed for the Portal.
  • Provide an overview of concepts and standards for data cataloguing, documentation, and dissemination, and practice the use of GeoNetwork opensource software as a metadata and data management tool.
