Give an in-depth overview of the Crop Portal Information Portal as well as of the various back-end components it is comprised of for administrators and programmers who will be in charge of administering and evolving the infrastructure in the future.

This training was oriented to system administrators and programmers who will be in charge of managing and extending the Pakistan's Crop Information Portal. The training will allow participants to become proficient in installing, administering and extending the system architecture, getting familiar with its various components:

  • GeoServer, main component responsible for visualizing the geospatial data.
  • MapStore, providing the basic WebGIS infrastructure on which the user interface is built.
  • GeoBatch, providing the ingestion functionalities, taking care of statistics computation and ingestion, raster preprocessing, and more.

During the training such components will be introduced and discussed in depth since they are the core of the infrastructure. Furthermore, the training will focus on the customization performed specifically for the project as well as on the administration portal that ties the component together to automate data upload and management and which has been specifically developed for the project.

Main Objectives:

  • Develop capacity of administration and management of the Portal.
  • Acquire skills in using the Portal for data, maps and related information publication and dissemination among the project's partners.
  • Practice the use and administration of the Web mapping application for displaying local and publicly available geo-spatial layers for the existing and future data of the project.
  • Get familiar with other Open Source concepts and tools on which most of the Portal components and modules are built.


  • Awareness and knowledge of open Source concepts and tools on which most of the Portal components and modules are built.
  • Understanding of Portal's backend components and their relations.
  • Acquisition of skills in the administration and maintenance of the Portal through the Web interface.
  • Skills in using the Web mapping component, designed for displaying geo-spatial layers published by the project or by remote sources.


Nineteen experts from Crop Reporting Services of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan; from the Agriculture Universities of Tandojam and Faisalabad; and from SUPARCO.
