Patrizia Monteduro (FAO), trainer
Training on: "GeoNetwork Opensource Software"

January 29th-31th, 2014, at SUPARCO, Islamabad, Pakistan
Trainer: Patrizia Monteduro (FAO)

Give an overview of the Geonetwork opensource software, its graphical interface integrated by theory and practice on metadata development, data publishing and administration of the Web portal.

Through this training, participants have familiarized with GeoNetwork, an opensource software developed in FAO several years ago to access geo-spatial databases and thematic maps from a variety of data providers, through descriptive metadata. International standards and protocols are at the core of the software to facilitate the spatial information cataloguing and exchange, using the capacities and the power of the Internet.

The main goal of the GeoNetwork Opensource project is to increase collaboration within and between organizations for reducing duplication of data and enhancing information consistency and quality to support informed decision making. FAO actively supported the development of GeoNetwork, being strongly convinced of the role of interoperable systems in the activities of geospatial data sharing promoted by data providers.

Main Objectives:

portal interface

  • Raise awareness of the importance of metadata in the geospatial context and illustrate its multiple use for data management, assessment and distribution.
  • Enable professional staff coming from different organizations, specialized in different fields such as statistics, agriculture and geomatics to learn how to use GeoNetwork and GeoServer software as a basis for documenting and publish geodata through the WEB.
  • Highlight the role of recognized international standards and protocols to ensure interoperability between different systems dealing with geospatial information.

  • High interest in the three day training by all participants, who were trained on the use of GeoNetwork main functionalities through live demos and practical exercises.
  • Awareness of the role of recognized international standards and protocols to ensure interoperability between different systems dealing with geospatial information.
  • Understanding of GeoNetwork potential as a tool for documenting and publishing data through the WEB following standards procedures and protocols.
  • Familiarity in installing the software, browsing data, edit metadata, create Web Map Services in GeoServer, and administrate GeoNetwork using Web and desktop tools.

Nineteen experts from Crop Reporting Services of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan; from the Agriculture Universities of Tandojam and Faisalabad; and from SUPARCO.
