Training on Carbon Sequestration

Islamabad, 1-3 June, 2016: Training on "Carbon Sequestration in forest, rangeland and agricultural ecosystems"

Organized by WWF-Pakistan, Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Sustainable Land Management Programme (SLMP)

The Ministry of Climate Change of Pakistan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are jointly implementing the Sustainable Land Management Programme (SLMP) to Combat Desertification in Pakistan. The SLMP is being implemented in two phases and designed to implement United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and National Action Programme (NAP) to combat desertification and mitigate impacts of drought in Pakistan in collaboration with provincial Planning and Development Departments. The project "Pakistan-National action Programs Alignment and Strengthening National Reporting Process" lines up Pakistan National Action Programs with UNCCD's 10 year strategic plan. Under its Output-1 the project planned to conduct trainings on Carbon Sequestration.

Trainings on Carbon Sequestration: certificates

The training emphasized on the importance of Carbon stock data collection, estimation and analysis issues. It also highlighted on devising the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) assessment for Carbon Sequestration projects. The Carbon pools present in the different source of Agriculture, Forestry and Rangelands were explained through different case studies.

Pakistan is among the most vulnerable countries that has been affected by weather related damages. The changing shifts in the climate due to deforestation, desertification and release of toxic pollutants in the atmosphere cause adverse impact. SUPARCO already using RS & GIS technology in the relevant fields of environment, agriculture & forestry. The expertise gained through the training will help in following ongoing projects of forest mapping and monitoring for Gilgit Baltistan and Punjab provinces.
