Workshop: Pakistan's Agriculture Information System: geo-spatial technologies for crop monitoring and forecasting in Punjab and Sindh

Summary
Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and Space and Upper Atmosphere Commission of Pakistan (SUPARCO) are implementing a United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) funded project "Agricultural Information System - Building Provincial Capacity in Pakistan for Crop Estimation, Forecasting, and Reporting based on the integral use of Remotely Sensed Data" with the objective to help Pakistan in enhancing and improving current systems for the integral use of remotely sensed data into existing data collection, analysis, and dissemination systems, improving accuracy and timeliness of crop area estimates and yield forecasts to improve of agricultural statistics. State of art computer hardware and software, first in Asia, will help provinces improve the existing crop forecasting and estimation.

Mr Iqbal (SUPARCO) presenting the project To show case the newly developed rural and agricultural survey tools, demonstrate cooperative use and sharing of field data and display the customized web-based information analysis and data delivery system to all government and non-government stakeholders, a workshop was organized at Sheesh Mehal Hall in Islamabad Serena Hotel on 29 October 2014.

Components such as the GLAM-Pakistan, Crop Portal, and the two smart phone applications for field data collection have been introduced through their contribution to CRSs regular crop reporting tasks. All other accomplishments are also highlighted.

Participants
Mr. Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan, federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, was the chief guest at the event. Officials from PARC (Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad, Chairman), FAO (Mr. Patrick T. Evans, FAO Representative-Pakistan), U.S. Embassy (Mr. David William, Agriculture Counselor US Embassy-Pakistan), USDA (Dr. Otto Gonzalez, Foreign Agricultural Service), and SUPARCO (Mr. Imran Iqbal) attended the workshop together with representatives of the governments of all provinces and regions of Pakistan, universities, farmers and the media.
