Area Frame

The Agriculture Information System project (GCP/PAK/125/USA) aims to strengthening agricultural, economics, market information and statistic services. In this respect, the land cover mapping component was considered a fundamental step. Many applications require detailed, updated, reliable and accurate baseline on land cover to support the spatial monitoring to evaluate ecosystem and landscape dynamics. In particular in agriculture, a reliable land cover model of the present features can robustly help the development and support the statistical applications.

The Area Frame has been developed to provide a statistical robust, cost-limited tool to monitor the agriculture in a country. FAO has successfully integrated the land cover database information derived from remote sensing into a procedure for crop area estimation (Area Frame Sampling).

The process involves many key steps:

  • STRATIFICATION: the land is divided into homogeneous groups or strata using the updated land cover data base generated using Land Cover Classification System (LCCS).
  • MULTI-STEP SAMPLING: Within each stratum, the land is further divided into sampling units or segments and a sample of segments selected for a survey.
  • ANALYSES: Statistical analysis is carry out since several basic decisions (e.g. land-use strata definitions, number of substrata, size of the sampling units, the allocation of the sample to the strata" and the method of selecting the sample). These decisions will have an appreciable impact on the statistical and cost efficiency of the final result.

Sep 2, 2015 - A new amendment (no. 3) was signed by USDA and FAO to formalize a no-cost extension of the project GCP/PAK/125/USA from Oct 1, 2015 to Sep 30, 2016.
